PayPal is an online payment service that lets a website accept PayPal balances, cards and local methods through a hosted checkout, buttons or a full gateway, charged per transaction.
PayPal appears on a broad set of sites: online stores on every platform, small businesses taking deposits, charities collecting donations, membership sites and software vendors. It is often the first payment method a small merchant adds because it needs no merchant account, so a PayPal button shows a business taking money online but says little about its size.
